What is a task and how is it different from a timesheet entry?

A task is a discrete piece of work to be done — it has a title, description, due date, assignee, and status. Think of it as a to-do item or action point.

A timesheet entry is a record of hours already spent on a project. They serve different purposes: tasks track what needs to happen; timesheets track how long things took.
